Out of Africa

5 11 2010

Morning all.
The final stages of preparation for Mike’s epic cycle ride around the wilds of Tanzania are upon us – he’s had the injections (ouch), got the anti malarial tablets, sprays, net, etc. (expensive) bought the safari suit (sexy) and pith helmet (does it go over or under the cycling helmet?) and some very exotic energy bars from Cheshire’s premier cycle shop in Audlem! And as the last minute nerves kick in (just how quickly would a wild furry thing catch up with a mountain biker) and not a Tanzanian shilling to be found anywhere in the country, I wanted to let you all know a little about what my foolish husband is doing and why.

As part of the Michelin team for Transaid Cycle Tanzania, Mike is raising money to help address the practical transport and communications issues which are a major barrier to development in third world countries such as Tanzania. Raising standards of driving safety, providing transport to access health services and developing and improving efficiency of transport systems are some of the areas Transaid are involved with.

Leaving this Saturday, 6th November, the team will be riding more than 400km over five days through nature reserves, rural countryside, local villages and to the foot of the Nguru Mountains, finishing in Dar es Salaam a week on Friday. Naturally, he told me he would enduring great hardship on this most gruelling of rides and would be camping out in the bush with the creepy crawlies on several occasions, but the information I’ve seen about most of their overnight stops leads me to believe that I’ve been duped!

The views of the bluest of oceans and the whitest of sand from the most romantic of balconies were not quite what I had expected. And as Mike’s version of heaven is to have the excuse to ride his bike for a week in a country where the only thing it’s safe to drink is beer……………….. So don’t feel at all sorry for him, because he’s going to have a blast!

Currently Team Michelin – Henry, Dan, Steph and Mike – have raised their target £12,000. But they would love to be able to improve on this. If you do feel like supporting this very worthwhile cause please just follow the link above to Just Giving.

Thank you. (and don’t worry about me and the girls; while the cat’s away…………………..!)

Rachel (Mike’s wife)
