Race Team – the first win of the season!!

1 04 2014

…and we are sure there will be plenty more!Alex Jones win 31-3-14

A great solo win for Alex (Jones) on Sunday – CDNW RR at Carnforth – on a hilly course he rode away from a good field of 70 starters to win by over a minute.

This is the first win of the season for the team, although we have several placings already (against strong opposition). The next big race is the Coalville RR next Sunday where we have the full Elite team riding – should be a tough race as some of the best teams are entered.

Alex’s blog entry follows;

Capernwray is a circuit that I knew would suit me well and one that I won a 3/4 race on at the start of last year. It has a pretty steep little ring style climb which lasts for about 4-5 minutes and then the rest of the 9mile lap is pretty rolling with some power climbs and fast turns.

Coming into the race I have been riding well in the hills so I knew that a good result was possible today, that coupled with Rich, Ryan and Woody all telling me I should win it, meant I felt a little bit of pressure, but pressure is good.

The field was decent and full at 70 riders- I thought that a former 1st cat from Velosure and one from KTM and also 2 juniors would be the ones to watch along with my team mate Mike. As the race got underway however the said riders didn’t seem particularly strong and Mike unfortunately punctured ruling him out. In the first few lap I was trying to split it each time up the climb by riding pretty hard on the front. Twice around 6 of us managed to get a bit of a gap but the negative riding meant that the remains of the bunch (about 20 or so) got back on each time. I was getting a little frustrated and attacked, I probably should have waited a lap or 2 longer or even to the foot of the climb for the final time but I’ll chalk that one too experience. The riders seemed a little scared of the main climb and none of them wanted to win the race, they were just focused on not losing it- therefor each time on the slight downhill/rolling approach to the climb there was a big lull in the pace. This is where I put in a dig and managed to get a gap of 10 seconds into the base which stretched to 25 over the top of the climb.

From there on the gap hovered around 25 seconds for a lap or so before I put in a big dip on the back headwind section and the traveling marshal told me I had a minute advantage into the last lap. It was a long old lap and was starting to die a little on the flats but had enough of a gap to get the win!

Great to get the first win on the board for Audlem CC after only a few weeks and hopefully this will now be followed by plenty more from everybody else.

Full gas guys!

Alexander Jones

Well done Alex – a brilliant effort
